I don't know what I was thinking.
My best Friend Roy called me up and said, "Hey, let's go see Frank Gorshin in The Sunshine Boys". And I laughed, because I knew he couldn't possibly mean it.
Then yesterday, I was watching TV and saw a commercial for the show, which also stars Dick Van Patten. Let me tell you something. If Eight is Enough, then Dick Van Patten in a Neil Simon comedy is excessive.
I suddenly I felt like I had to see it. Not that I wanted to; it had nothing to do with desire. It was compulsion, a sick, twisted need to witness this horrible atrocity.
I don't know where that comes from. Maybe it's the same dark part of us that sits in bumper to bumper traffic, knowing there's an accident up ahead, and hoping we'll get to see a head rolling around on the 405. I mean, if you get stuck in traffic, you should at least see some carnage. You know what I mean? No? Never mind.
Anyway, it was beyond my ability to control it. I was in too deep. I immediately went to the Cerritos Performing Arts Center web site, where I discovered the tickets were $45 each.
Oh, I balked at first. But then I thought, one of these guys will most likely suffer a massive heart attack during the play, so it's actually a better deal than it looks. You know what I mean? No?
Never mind.
