Star Sighting

Well! Two in one week. First Gregory Hines, now this.

Yesterday I was at Fred Segal, killing some time before getting my hair cut.

I was looking at some cargo pants on a table that I couldn't get my fat ass into without a shoe horn and a tub of Country Crock, and there was a woman next to me with a bunch of clothes over her arm. She had on a black leather bucket hat pulled way down so you couldn't see her face. She was looking at a shirt that had "Make Love, Not War" embroidered on the back.I noticed that the salesgirls were looking at her very intently, and it was only then I realized I was standing next to Winona Ryder.

My first thought was, my God, what must it be like to be her and go shopping? Everyone around you thinks you're wigged out on Vicodin and shoving shirts in your purse.

Then I started to think about how badly she was treated by Saks and the D.A., and how awful that whole thing was. I've always felt bad about the way that was handled; I even said so on the show (11/9/02, 8:00 PM).

I decided I should say something to her. But how? I started to rehearse some things in my head to see how they sounded:

"Excuse me, I don't want to invade your privacy but . . . "

"I know you don't know me, but I think . . ."

Then I thought, what the hell does she care what I think? How much would it suck to have a complete stranger come up to you in a store and bring up the most horrible experience of your life?

I decided to just let it go. She was probably too fucked up on Vicodin to know what I was saying anyway.
