I realize that I’m only half Jewish, but that doesn’t mean I’m not busy trying to control the media. In fact, it’s an even bigger job for someone like me, seeing as my mother is Italian. I hardly have time to wax my mustache, much less run the New York Times.
And so it was when I made my Seasonal Favorites mp3 category available recently, and inadvertantly neglected to tip my yarmulke to Hannukah. It is, after all, coming up in just a few days, and it was incumbent upon me to provide some extra special Jew music for every little Binyamin and Gabby to enjoy as they light the candles and secretly wish they were gentile because Santa is just so much more kick ass than praying for 8 days.
So today I’ve added a few cuts from the Klezmer Nutcracker; a stunning blend of traditional Ashkenazi dance music, and the fevered Christmas dream of everyone’s favorite Russian closet case. An arranged match made in heaven!
And while not specifically holiday related, I’ve added a surfer version of Shalom Alechem by Meshugga Beach Party to the OyTunes section. Just to keep it all light and lively at the dinner table.
As we used to say in my house, “Yes, Yoninah, there is a Sanson Claus!
And then we’d pass the ham.

I’m off to Canter’s for a pastrami and a side of pickles. Pass the salt.

Oh, such a trauma I’m having here. Sheesh! This “Sugar Plum Klezmer” you got here, it’s like I’m suddenly reliving my circumcision all over again! OY! GEVALT!

I thought everyone’s favorite russian closet case was Gorby. Raysha with her god awful hats certainly looked like a beard to me. Speaking of closet cases, Richard Chamberlain played his own piano as Tchaikovsky in Ken Russell’s ‘the music lovers’.

Sanson Claus? Oy! That reminds me, the boy in the Log In To Comment image looks like he just saw Nambla Claus, who brings “presents” to all bad little boys (but not girls).
Everytime someone clicks on that image the hands of a NAMBLA member start to sweat.

Richard Chamberlain “played his own piano”?
Is this a euphemism I’ve never heard before?

Dicky Chamberlain’s thoughts were that he was perfect to play Tchaikovsky because he played the piano. The interview was made when the film came out which was before dicky did. The best scene is the end where his wife, played by Glenda Jackson, is in nuthouse, shaved head, letting all the fetid old men feel her up and exclaiming, ‘i’ve got lots of boyfriends now’. With the Pathetique symphony playing as incidental music. Perhaps Ken Russell’s best stuff outside the ‘the devils’.
