Spots and Pans

March 4th, 2008 · 30 Comments

By now you know that John and I have a couple of weird dogs.

One of our dogs, a Wire Fox Terrier named Mac, has a thing for small spaces. Any place she can fit is the place to be.

She climbs into boxes, sits in the hamper, sleeps in the closet — she even did this last year, which was really odd. Although, to be fair, it was summer.

I don’t know for certain why she does this, but we did rescue her out of a pet shop where she’d spent 5 months in a cage. We think maybe getting into these little spaces is comforting in some way.

Anyway, we’re moving on Friday, so we’ve been packing up the place. And Mac seems to have developed an interest in empty cabinets.

Last night, as we were packing up the kitchen, we noticed Mac sniffing out the cabinet where we’d been keeping our pots and pans. We watched in amazement as she slowly crawled all the way inside, until just her tail was sticking out.

John got down on the floor and tried to coax her out, but she was too busy licking the wall at that point. So John carefully closed the cabinet door.

After about five seconds he opened it back up again, and she she was now facing the other way. It was like David Copperfeld, only entertaining.

I suppose it’s possible that she may lose interest in this little game as the years go on, and she’s solved all the mysteries she cares to.

Fortunately for us, she’s passed her love of the sport onto future generations.

Well, at least your dogs do something interesting-my dog just sleeps all day.

John-email me your new address-don’t be like your brother-(you know who I mean). He didn’t send me his new address for two months.

I have a terrier too. They like the small spaces because their nature is to dig dens in the dirt, or “terra” hence the name “terrier”.
And all terriers love ice cubes! Mine prefers ice over cookies. She’s a cheap date!

    Thoid!

Do your dogs hog for attention? When I’m playing with one dog, the other tries to worm her way in. It’s quiet entertaining, but then I’m easily amused.

is that salad spray in your fridge?

They used to be wolves – our dog prefers to be under a table or otherwise sheltered, and we say “she’s in her wolf cave.”

I’m more interested in the fact that April keeps a supply of diet cherry-vanilla Doctor Pepper. I’ve heard that it tastes like ass.

Your dogs are dangerously adorable and awesome.

It was like David Copperfield, except we couldn’t figure out how she did it.

  • 10 steve // Mar 4, 2008 at 8:41 pm

no, it’s Strawberries n’ Cream Diet Pepsi Jazz that tastes like ass. I wish I was making that up: http://www.jazzdietpepsi.com/

but I’m with you on the diet cherry-vanilla Dr. Pepper problem. I’ve never understood the need to add flavors to Dr. Pepper, since it already tastes like root beer with a clove cigarette put out in it.

  • 11 April // Mar 4, 2008 at 8:44 pm

    Take it back.

  • 12 steve // Mar 4, 2008 at 8:45 pm

what, the clove butt? you can sip around it, can’t you?

  • 13 April // Mar 4, 2008 at 8:51 pm

Those are fighting words. Dr. Pepper is sacred around here. And it’s Vanilla Coke that tastes like ass.

ooh, good one. Put this in the new fridge and see who notices: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Thunder

Anyone else remember when Dr.Pepper used to be marketed being a great served hot?
The adds ran around the Christmas season.
Nothing says Christmas like a steaming cup of Dr. Pepper.

    Wow,nice work by me.

the one younger dog (scully?) is really cute. All my cats do that … and then they scratch me, and I bleed, and then I cry.

    What’s the big deal?

I used to do the exact same thing they do, right up until I was about 5. By diligent research, I found I slept better on a shelf in the hall closet than in a big dumb bed.

Pity I’ve outgrown the ability to get into those lovely snug little places anymore.

    Don’t knock it until you’ve given it a hurl – it’s a blast!

My Mom used to make me hot Dr. Pepper , with lemon, when I was sick.

I’m with you on Diet Dr. Pepper, Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper and even Diet Berries and Creme Dr. Pepper.
BUT… what’s up with Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper. Do they think that as long as the good Dr. Pepper name appears on the can, they can put ANYTHING in there? Talk about tasting like ass! That tastes like Stella Doro chocolate cookies and cough syrup.

  • 21 Stretch // Mar 5, 2008 at 8:52 am

Diet Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper is a commitment. Its interesting – yet I can’t describe it as refreshing.
For refreshing – lets talk Diet Mtn Dew!!!

I love Dr. Pepper. I’d bath in it if I could. However, Chocolate Cherry Dr. P is vile. So very, very wrong. It’s like mixing Yohoo and smelly feet together and throwing in a dollop of cherry cough drops.

Has April ever ordered some “real” Dr. Pepper (with cane sugar) from Dublin, TX?

Diet Dr. Pepper Cherry Vanilla is superb

Can’t say the same for the Chocolate variety

we are concerned that the chocolate will take up precious shelf space normally allocated to Diet Dr Pepper Cherry Vanilla

If a dog is caged, especially when young, they get comfort and security in a cage (or other small space).

When my dog was a puppy, I used to cage him when I was out for a few hours as he would otherwise destroy furniture, shoes, anything. When he got past the puppy stage, I couldn’t give his cage away because he would hang out there even when not locked in. In fact, I had to buy him another cage for our vacation home so he would have a “house”. He willingly goes in it when the pest control guy or other strangers come to the house.
April, you should buy your dog a crate of her own.

Caging. This could explain the comfort and stimulation some find in the Bondage fetishes. I’ll bet it’s more prevalent in lone dogs as opposed to dogs that have more contact with other dogs. No wonder the CIA isn’t getting any intelligence out of all those caged and abused ‘combatants’. They’re all enjoying their stays in their cages and the attention they’re getting as opposed to the repressive society they come from.

I don’t think your dogs are so strange. I have a cat that eats candy corn and will lick the Italian dressing off of lettuce leaves. All this from an animal that thinks that humans are warm-blooded furniture!
