Ray-Che

May 28th, 2008 · 66 Comments

The comment thread in yesterday’s post about Ray-Che has been very interesting to read.

I started to reply to a few, but I saw that it was becoming its own blog, so I decided to post here.

Your comments are in italics (or as my stepfather from Missouri would say, eye-talics):

After doing some research, I guess it does bear a vague resemblance to a terror-rag. Still not sold on the idea that this was some sort of statement on what’s-her-face’s part.

Agreed.

For the record, I did not say – nor did I see anyone else say – that Rachael Ray is a terrorist sympathizer, or that she’s sending a message in some way. This woman can barely get through a 30 second commercial about fucking Munchkins, for God’s sake. She probably thinks “Arafat” is something you add to gravy.

To the contrary, the reason this bothers me is that it is so unaware.

And there’s no excuse. They have enough people on that payroll analyzing everything from what lipstick she should wear to what donut names get the highest emotional score. They re obligated to look at what they put around that woman’s neck.

And P.S. – make it tighter next time.

Not eager to be the major-league turd in the punchbowl here, BUT … you do know that both US & British Special Forces wear kaffiyehs too, right?

That’s true, but that’s not what that garment represents in the minds of many people, and there’s a price to pay for being that out of touch.

For example, if UPS started calling their delivery people “Brown Shirts”, what kind of association would that create in the marketplace?

“Hey, our guys wear brown shirts, too. Not just Nazis, you know! It’s just a shirt!”

Or how about if Play Station started doing vial marketing by putting red dots between people’s eyes, like a target? That would be cool right? Until someone pointed out that a mark like that is also a bindhi, and it has religious and social meaning in some cultures.

“Hey, people about to get killed by lasers have those too, you know! It’s just a red dot!”

How about if Martha Stewart started advertising her 300 thread count sheets by wearing them over her head? They’re so luxurious, you want to live in them! It would be fine until some loudmouth came along with that whole KKK thing.

“Hey, ghosts wear them too, you know! It’s just a sheet!”

Some objects and imagery are loaded. No matter what your intent, certain things have more meaning than what you personally ascribe to them.

This was a non-event until (Michelle Malkin) made the ad into a controversy, with the help of her VERY loyal readership.

Listen, if you’re going to ague that something is irrelevant when opportunists are involved, then bring Imus back to CBS.

Malkin absolutely exploited it, just as all pundits do, on both sides of the aisle, when they see a story that could boost their profile. But exploiting something is not the same as inventing it.

I can’t summarily dismiss her observations on this one just because she’s a cretin. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

April, I’m having trouble understanding your position. Are you gravitating towards this story because you’re angered by the offensive nature of the faux pas? Or are you just railing on Dunkin Donuts because of an idiot move that was bad for their bottom line?

I’m having trouble seeing you as the type to get all up in arms over something that might offend people. But judging by your previous comments… Well, I just don’t know what to believe anymore.

I quote: “It may not have meaning to you, but some people find it deeply upsetting.”

Deeply upsetting? Jesus God, April, let me tune up the old Stradivarius.

Since when did your demo care about the tender feelings of others? Since when did you? For two and a half years you produced some of the most entertaining talk radio ever. You did this by mocking and ridiculing just about everyone who passed within your sights. And when offended parties would write in with their complaints, you would openly mock them, while simultaneously giving out their email addresses. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. Why the sudden change?

  • 3 JohnnyBoy // May 28, 2008 at 10:06 am

Uh, because we hate Rachael Ray?

  • 4 Speedy Cerviche // May 28, 2008 at 10:12 am

    April, while you’re answering questions:

Do you think that scarf was an actual kaffiyeh, worn either out of ignorance or some misguided, offensive attempt to be hip and edgy? Or do you think the scarf was just a scarf, any resemblance being unintentional on the Ray camp’s part, with the only problem being the danger of the ad-watching public mistaking it for a genuine kaffiyeh?

I personally think the resemblance is unintentional. It’s within the realm of possibility that a scarf bearing a passing resemblance to a Middle-Eastern uniform item might pass under the radar of the ever-present focus groups, etc. But I simply cannot picture Rachel Ray’s fashion maven or whatever going up to her and saying, “Check out what I’ve picked out for your new national ad campaign! It’s a terrorist scarf, they’re soooooo hot with that powerful ‘angsty pseudo-anarcho-communist’ demographic. Delish!”

Even though I feel it was unintentional, Dunky D’s probably did the right thing for their bottom line. You could show me a picture of that scarf a hundred times, and I would never place it as a terrorist (or even Middle-Eastern) accessory. But some people obviously would, and those people probably spend more money on donuts and coffee than I do.

  • 5 April // May 28, 2008 at 10:19 am

No sudden change. What I’m railing about is idiocy, and that’s what I always do.

We were in San Francisco a few years ago and we passed through a craft fair. There was a gay artist there who made stained glass window hangers of fucking Che Guevara. I could not believe my eyes.

Che Guevara detested homosexuals. He hosted book burnings. He personally ordered the executions of hundreds of people, and this assclown at a craft fair is making homages to him because it’s hip.

THAT’S what I’m talking about. People who have no idea what they’re wearing or supporting, but gee, doesn’t this scarf look cool?

Conversely, I have no issue at all with you if you’re wearing this shit to make a point. But don’t wear a kaffiyeh because “it looks cool”, and then get pissy when someone points out its actual meaning.

  • 6 Speedy Cerviche // May 28, 2008 at 10:24 am

That’s good. I’m glad you’re not going all soft on me.

I like my April like I like my mid-’90s independent label comic book antiheroes: Mean, witty, and without a shred of conscience or remorse.

  • 7 JohnnyBoy // May 28, 2008 at 10:28 am

Seriously, Speedy, did you REALLY want a rant like:

“Oh, she’s dressed like a TERRORIST? So fucking WHAT ! Get OVER it ! Thin-skinned Jews make lousy lampshades ! ” ???????

  • 8 April // May 28, 2008 at 10:29 am

Do you think that scarf was an actual kaffiyeh, worn either out of ignorance or some misguided, offensive attempt to be hip and edgy?

I don’t know if it was an actual kaffiyeh, but the fact that we’re even asking that means it was way too close.

Pick another fucking scarf, for Christ’s sake.

  • 9 Speedy Cerviche // May 28, 2008 at 10:43 am

^Agreed. Especially when they micromanage everything to be seen by the ad-watching public, as alluded to in your post.

But that Che thing’s a real pisser. His popularity with idiotic GAP-shopping suburban kids is just astounding. God, the irony’s so thick and tender you can cut it with a fork.

Reminds me of a spray-painted stencil I saw at a local park: The ubiquitous Che-in-a-beret pic, accompanied by the text “I HAVE NO IDEA WHO THIS IS, BUT MY FRIENDS THINK HE’S COOL”.

The natives said it best: Tengo una remera del Che / y no sé por qué

“For the record, I did not say – nor did I see anyone else say – that Rachael Ray is a terrorist sympathizer…”

Then obviously someone is asleep at the switch. Allow me:

“RACHEL RAY IS A TERRORIST SYMPATHIZER!”

There. Maybe that will finally get her off TV.

  • 19 pal Jacky // May 28, 2008 at 12:18 pm

Rachel Ray’s very existence gives credence to the terrorists’ arguments.
It is just stupid. Kind of like when illegal aliens wear Cesar Chavez shirts when Chavas himself insisted farm workers enter the country legally. Or how about this, in the very first ‘legend of zelda’ video game they have a dungeon in the shape of a swastika. And Nintendo wrote lots on how it was an ancient ‘mangi’ symbol and actually mirror image of the nazi’s so it wasn’t really a swastika.
It would have been easier to just changer the damn thing.
With at I’ll go back to envsioning things like Mike Rowe turning up at Rachel Ray’s OB-GYN for an episode of ‘dirty jobs’ where he gets to pull scabs out of her twat. Because that is what everyone wants out of me anyway.

Confused as to why I should be outraged over an item of clothing that somewhat looks like a scarf people of different religions wear in the Middle East, I decided to visit a Dunkin Donuts to see the extent of their terrorist ties. And I was shocked. I’m not sure all of you are aware of this, but they sell pastries in the shape of an Islamic crescent! Not only that, they’ve given them a French name! Please join me in writing Dunkin Donuts and demand they replace the offending baked good with Freedom Rolls.

Confused as to why I should be outraged over an item of clothing that somewhat looks like a scarf people of different religions wear in the Middle East…

Don’t be confused, Pixie. That’s what Google is for.

The black and white keffiyeh is considered the symbol of the Fatah. The Fatah is responsible for such donut-friendly activities as airplane hijackings and terrorist attacks. Then there was the time they hijacked a bus and sprayed passing cars with machine gun fire, killing 37 civilians. De-lish!

You don’t have to be outraged. You just have to know what it means before you wear it.

  • 23 JohnnyBoy // May 28, 2008 at 12:46 pm

And let’s not forget good ol’ James Earl “Racial” Ray !

  • 24 pixie // May 28, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Sorry you missed the sarcasm, April.

Last time I checked, the Fatah don’t wear paisley. And while certain colors in keffiyeh can be linked to different factions, even apolitical Palestinians wear black-and-white — and red and green — keffiyehs.

Besides, Rachael’s just following the rules…

my great grandfather was a hasidic rabbi. Orthodox Jews cannot get tattoos. The Nazis knew this hence their numbering system. Nonetheless, Madonna thought that getting khabbala tattoos would show the world her earnest belief in its spiritualism. Then she wondered why she wasn’t better accepted in Israel.

  • 26 inerror // May 28, 2008 at 1:45 pm

Apparently the wearing of the http://www.simplyislam.com/iteminfo.asp?item=50643” rel=”nofollow”> keffiyeh has become all the rage in Europe and Canada, where the cause of Palestinian rights is less tempered by a thriving Jewish component. Rachel is just another clueless, dimwit follower of fashion probably completely ignorant of Palestinians, their history or present situation.

I have written to station management of KPFK here in LA for their inclusion of Che on their home page banner along with peace advocates such as Martin Luther King and Ghandi. Che was a proponent of violent overthrow in the Marxist sense and had no place among advocates of peace. The banner is now down. But I wouldn’t doubt if it reappears after their upcoming fund drive. I like many have a love/hate thing with that station.

The same thing happened during the Vietnam war protests. There was usually a sprinkling of knotheads waving Viet Cong flags and carrying Mao’s Little Red Book and sporting the likeness of Stalin on the back of their jacket. This enraged others there, almost unanimously for an end to a corrupt war, not for victory of the hammer and cycle over capitalism.

  • 27 April // May 28, 2008 at 2:14 pm

Stuff white people like? Wait, is that sarcasm too? You’re going too fast for me Pixie.

I don’t care if her scarf is paisley or has fucking Elvis on it. It looks way too much like a black and white keffiyah, and that makes it a really bad choice.

It doesn’t mean Ray has terrorist ties, it doesn’t mean Dunkin Donuts is sending a message, it’s just sloppy and stupid.

It’s irritating to me as well. If anyone was to go up to one of those GAPaphiles and ask, “Do you know who that guy is on your shirt there?” my guess is the response would be something like, “Like, oh-em-eff-gee, I don’t know but it, like, looks cool *Tori Spelling giggle*”

I thought, “What the hell were her people thinking? What were the ad wizards thinking? Did they all ride the short bus to work today?”

    It’s dumbness, that’s it. Terminal, E-V-O-O-il dumbness.

  • 30 ira_shlamazel // May 28, 2008 at 4:54 pm

When I lived in New York, I wore a keffiyeh, like many other non-arabs, all winnter because A.) they’re warm, and you can cover your face if the snow blowing hard (or the stench of piss is too great!) and B.) They are about $3.00 and come in many colors. Now back in CA, they serve nicely as tablecloths.

That being said, I see the picture and franky, it never would have occured to me simply because it looks nothing like a keffiyeh. Really. Keffiyehs have a very distinct pattern, that her scarf clearly does not.
(Go to http://tinyurl.com/5ajjt6 to see one.

April, not everyone who wears one of those Arabic scarves is a terrorist. As has been pointed out, our soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq have been known to wear them, too. And, anyway, it’s not an Arabic scarf. It’s very clearly a black-and-white paisley scarf. An ugly black-and-white paisley scarf. On an annoying, hideous pitchwoman who is a whore for every offer that floats her way. But I think, with all due respect, that you’re unable to get past your (rightful) visceral hatred of R.R. and see instead that it’s a very scary time when someone who wears a scarf around her neck, or someone who doesn’t wear a flag pin on his lapel gets excoriated as unpatriotic or as a terrorist sympathizer.

This isn’t about patriotism or terrorism, it’s about stupidity. There are millions of scarves. Pick one that doesn’t look so much like a keffiyeh that you start a shit storm.

  • 41 clevelandphil // May 28, 2008 at 10:17 pm

This is funny. Michelle Malkin screams because Rachel Ray wears a scarf similar to what terrorists wear, but she supports a war criminal responsible for a lot of deaths. She should be on KABC. They have a self-hating gay, a self-hating les, a self-hating black. They used to have a self-hating jew, but he left. Why not a self-hating asian?
Michelle Malkin truly is a bushie-cunt.

  • 42 pal Jacky // May 28, 2008 at 11:45 pm

the proper term for ‘bushie-cunt’ is ‘bush pig’. The first one was Karen Hughes, but my early fave is Katherine Harris. No, I didn’t see ‘recount’, but really after the country has gotten so fucked up the ass because of the president outlawing the legislative branch and taking over the judicial and running rampant with his great ideas, shouldn’t people like Katherine Harris feel a little responsible? Or do they just all own so much oil stock that paying shitloads at the pump just means big dividends. I’m telling you right now, I’m writing in Charles Manson for president for the first time since ‘88. Hopefully I can find “Don’t blame me, I voted for Manson”- bumper sticker to replace “I brake for adrienne barbeau film festivals”

Originally only released in black, the device was eventually released in White as well. And of course, Sony wanted to advertise it as being better than the previous black generation of PSPs.

Their ad campaign was centered around the superiority of White. Their tag line was “White Is Coming”, and they used images like this:

I think Michelle Malkin would look great in a Colombian Necktie

    Eli (32) wins the thread!

But I’d let the process continue until America has only ONE Top Boss ugly loony-lady, then send HER to Iraq & bring the troops home. If THAT creature can’t beat ‘em, they can’t be beaten. How to stop the beast from finding its way back to the States without the use of nuclear force is another question.

McCain’s daughter was also rececntly seen wearing a REAL keffiyeh … uh oh, time to put her on the No-Fly List.

Check out what Michelle’s own freeper compadres have to say about her Scarf Crusade:

    Not a home-run, apparently.

This whole scarfgate thing leaves me cold (pun intended).

A point to ponder – if a lot of dumb kiddies wear all this “radical” symbolic clothing, doesn’t it actually wind up offending the real radicals a lot more than anyone else? If I was a hardcore Maoist or Jihadi, the thought of some pot-smoking lesbian co-opting my image would probably not seem cute or amusing. Worse, I’d be powerless to stop them from doing it. Is that an argument for or against such cultural reification, I wonder?

As for doubts about MM being a self-hating Asian? Oh, come ON – she’s openly stated that one of the worst civil rights disasters of modern American history, dispossessing disenfranchising & interning innocent Japanese-Americans – in the absence of any evidence of either espionage or disloyalty – was just dandy, & wrote an entire book to “prove” it. Now, try to picture an African-American writing a book defending segregation in pre-60s America.

What I hate most about this issue?
You’ve already made me see the Ray-Thing.
    TWICE.
Trying to … unsee it … trying … harder … failing … please, for the love of GOD, make it stop, make it STOP!

Oh, and when did April get involved in politics?

  • 65 Osafp // May 29, 2008 at 11:36 pm

April, I’ll try and say this clearly and slowly for you….”It’s….only…a….scarf…..”
As for M. Malkin — she’s just as bad as the Sudanese regime that wanted to execute the British woman for naming the teddy bear Mohammed (nevermind that the children in her class named the bear). You shouldn’t be acquiescing to the likes of her. You constantly bemoan political correctness, yet you roll over for Michelle Malkin?

  • 66 April // May 30, 2008 at 12:11 am

Ok Osafp, let me say this slowly and clearly for you.

    You’re trolling,

I have said over and over over again that this has nothing to do with Michelle Malkin. I could give two shits about her, and my opinion on this is not informed by her rhetoric.

This isn’t even about politics. IT’S ABOUT ADVERTISING. That’s the only thing I’m commenting on.
