Actual Writing

November 3rd, 2008 · 20 Comments

I realize you don’t see a lot of actual writing on my web site, mainly due to the fact that I’m illiterate.

So it stands to reason that seeing a well crafted, thoughtful and engaging piece about the elections might startle you, especially since you were probably coming here to see something like this.

It’s for that reason that I’m not cutting and pasting here, but offering a link to you instead. A link to an extremely well-reasoned and ultimately very revealing piece by one of my favorite writers.

John Foley.

John has had a very difficult experience over the last few months, watching John McCain become a man he could not, in good conscience, vote for. He writes about the journey with a lot of candor, and I have tremendous respect for his process, and his honesty.

I think we’ve all had a journey over the last few months, and I wish I could put words to everything I’ve been feeling. But I can’t come close to this piece, which says so much, so effortlessly.

I support a smaller government and a strong defense, but not as much as I support the rights of gays and women.

You can read it here.

Tomorrow, I’ll post my collection of the most offensive images I’ve seen in the last month or so. It’s high time things get back to normal around here.

    Dear John F:

With you on McCain 2000. With you mostly on McCain 2008. Except that we don’t know who Obama is, to quote Tom Brokaw and Charlie Rose.

His friends scare me. Davis,Ayers, Wright. His politics scare me — he doesn’t believe in Capitalism and wouldn’t have a clue what to do if he had to push the button.

I hate Bush for not letting Capitialism work but I’m scared of Obama for not believing it works at all.

I saw Palin’s final speech tonight. She is not the same person she was on August 31st.

If you don’t know who Obama is and what he stand for, you are deaf and illiterate. He’s written 2 books telling us, or haven’t you heard? We’ve had 2 years of non stop discussion.

And I’d take Davis, Ayers, & Write as friends before I’d take Cheney, Rove, Limbaugh or Hannity…

The lesser of two evils is still evil.

Wouldn’t electing the anti christ bring about the rapture and Jesus’ return? This would be a positive thing for christians.

Oh, just the sort of unjustified arrogance we’ve all come to expect from both sides this year. The original “poster” doesn’t know who Obama is, because all his little dopey followers have been doing is spouting moronic slogans for as long as I can remember. Hope and Change and Free Doughnuts tells us nothing about his views.
I hardly think that Cheney and Rove and Limbaugh and Hannity are McCain’s friends. Quite the opposite.

Obama strikes me as a nice guy who loves his wife and grandma. He also strikes me as someone who is curiously devoid of any feeling for the uniqueness of this country. He has accomplished essentially nothing of note since law school aside from running for president. His past and present associations are of great concern to me and his decidedly anti-capitalist economics should trouble anyone trying to start a business or simply build a better finanvial future for themselves. He doesn’t appear to recognize the genuine evil in this world that would try to destroy us.

Bottom line for me: when it comes to the presidential ticket, I vote for the guy who’ll be more likely to protect this country and less likely to pick my wallet. This time, it’s McCain. Obama needs to go back to the minors, get some actual experience in the Senate and we’ll talk again in 2012.

    Why is “poster” in quotes?

  • 8 jasonthegreat // Nov 4, 2008 at 10:20 am

Closeted homosexuals always put poster in quotes.

  • 9 April // Nov 4, 2008 at 10:25 am

Oh that made us both laugh like jackals.

I read what John wrote. I am also a republican voting for Obama. I can only relate McCain to stagnant water. It is time for change. I could not vote for someone who wants to treat human beings as less because of sexual orientation, or because they are women. It was not long ago that the color of you skin or religion meant you were less of a person, and could result in your torture or death. I don’t know if Obama will mistakes, he just might. All I know is that he will succeed or fail while moving forward.

John, Thank you for putting in to words, what I have felt for months!!!

Wow. John’s not only a sexy beast, but frighteningly eloquent.

Excellent post! (notice there’s no “quotes” around post) Thanks Mr. Foley!!

What do you mean “Clinton polarized the country”?
It was WONDERFUL when Bill was President. A lot better than your fascist bastard Ronald Reagan, your fascist bastard George Bush (elected AND selected) or the king of the fascist bastards Richard Milhouse Nixon.
The only ones polarizing the country were the nazis on coservative talkradio screaming about a consented blowjob and Whitewater.
BTW gas was a buck when Bill was President.

    Mr. Foley:
Thank you for that nicely written eloquent piece. I enjoyed reading it.

  • 15 John Foley // Nov 4, 2008 at 11:22 am

    clevelandphil-
Pay attention. I didn’t say Clinton was bad, I said that he was a polarizing figure. How can you argue with that? The right wing HATED him and would have done anything to bring him down. If half the country is left and half is right, and the President is loathed by the right, then the country is polarized.
Also, anyone who throws around the words “fascist” and “nazi” as indiscriminately as you do is really not worth listening to.

  • 16 clevelandphil // Nov 4, 2008 at 11:51 am

That’s right, blame the victim. The neoconazis yell about Clinton, so Clinton is at fault.

BTW Mick and the futon guy never gave us any problems.

That’s right, blame the victim. The neoconazis yell about Clinton, so Clinton is at fault.

Who’s blaming Clinton? The hatred the right wing had for him is solely responsible for the rise of conservative talk radio, which polarized the country in a way not seen since Vietnam. Being a polarizing figure does not mean you’re the one doing the polarizing.

Here’s how Wiki defines polarization: “The term “polarization” comes from political science. There, it is a measure of the electorate’s response to a political figure or position;[1] it is not an assessment of, or a value judgment upon, a political figure. It does not mean that a political figure is necessarily unelectable.[2] Political figures can receive a polarized response from the public through actions of their own,[3] through historical trends or accidents,[3] or due to external forces such as media bias.[4]“

    Now that’s just tacky! Tsk.

I’m going to guess that I’m in the minority wishing that the topic of dog farts will come up again soon.

  • 20 DavidinBerkeley // Nov 4, 2008 at 2:40 pm

And I will add to the mix of the current conversation that while I did vote Democrat (and generally do), I voted for the party this time more than for Obama.

And since Biden impressed me more than the other candidates early on in the process, I would have had a devil-of-a-time figuring out who to vote for if Obama had NOT picked him for v.p.

So I guess I’m saying I do understand about JF having difficulty choosing his vote.
