I suppose writing noncontroversial works that keep one in the the good graces with a rotten regime could be considered better than shostakoitch with his seething resentments and hiding real music(like his symphony #4) and then putting out propagandist drivel like his symphonies 2 and 3. I could go on and on about this, but I think I already have.

one other thing. When it came to musicians. Bernstein wouldn't conduct orff's works becuause of his ties to the nazi party but Solti didn't have that problem. However, lenny was a bit of a loudmouth sir george became the greatest conductor of Wagner in the stereophonic era while not promoting the fact his was Jewish and much of his family died in the camps.

actually, it is a little less cut and dried than that. But a lot more interesting. Orff took a few positions held by R. Strauss in 1936 when Strauss' conscience got too much for him. Hence the case for denazifying strauss has been rather simple. But doesn't 'prove' he was a nazi. It does seem that orff wanted his 'vaterland's' approval and after the trionfi(carmina buranan, catuilli carmina and triononi di aphrodite) he composed two 'folk opera's 'der mond' and 'die Kluge' which earned him much praise from the third reich even though they are really more or less harmless fairy tales and tot real propaganda. After the war he devoted his time to working with children creating music for them to perform. Some of which is rather fascinating and is excellent 'art phony' bait because unless told what it is they think it is early minamalism. I like to think that he became so disgusted with adult behavior during the hitler years that he turned his attention to the only innocent things around, the kids.

I stayed up late with 'salo' last night and it is the first time I've seen it on widescreen since I first saw it in the theater when I was a pup. Numero uno, the wedding feast gives the one in 'freaks' a run for the money. Okay, they are totally different, but gosh. Secondly, I'm taken back to how much it looks like the films of Kubrick. Objective camera work and lots of symmetry. Instead of breaking a glass and growing older like in '2001', we have a girl breaking a glass then getting ass-raped for it. I need to rewatch 'a clockwork orange'. Here's something subtle, the latin chant that fills much of the final scene is from the nazi composer orff. It is part of 'carmina burana' yes it lasts a bit longer than the 'o fortuna' used everywhere.

I was surprised to see it in the 'criterion' section at Borders. I haven't bought a lot of DVD's lately, since I'm planning to upgrade to 'blu-ray' soon(okay I've been saying that for a while) but heck It was on sale, and I haven't been able to get a copy of it since that small minded person. It's got the same packaging as Fassbinder's 'berlin, alexanderplatz' and I don't know if they are repackaging other back catalog items. 'BA' being 16mm original, and out of circulation for 20years, I just don't think it is going to be the film that is raced to blu-ray.

Great minds think alike, Jacky... I downloaded that sumbitch off of Demonoid a couple of months ago. 14 gigs, if you can believe it. The extras make it worth a second go-round, though.

Also, amazon.com's reviews of this film are wonderful. Click on the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/review/product/1559408855/ref=cm_cr_dp_hist_1?%5Fencoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&filterBy=addOneStar" rel="nofollow">one star</a> category and be entertained for hours!

"The imagery of the two men kissing with excrement on their faces has been difficult to erase, not to mention the child rapes..." Yeah, you're tellin' me, sister.

for the real sick fucks out there, Criterion has re-released 'salo-the 120 days of Sodom'. new packaging and perhaps transfer(i lent my original copy to a person who never spoke to me again) It was out of print for a long time. what the world needs now is films where children are boiled in stew pots filled with shit that just look wonderful in flat screen technology.

my friend Milo is a diabetic and in recovery. He's got a class action lawsuit going. If you are an diabetic addict in your 40's to 50's, you too can sue Julie Andrews. her horrific worldview that 'A spoonful of suger makes the medicine go down... in the most delightful way' has ruined too many people to be ignored any longer.
