And this proves it, once and for all.

And as long as we’re going after the Japanese, let’s put the last nail in the Christmas coffin with this bonus track from longtime ex-listener Andre:

After that I need a Satchmo cocktail, aka a joint with a Swiss Kriss chaser.

I notice the Japanese have a healthy appreciation of blackface. A traveling buddy of mine once sent me a bottle of “Darkie” watermelon soda, which features a startlingly racist mascot straight out of a minstrel show. And of course, all you heroes who watched bootlegged VHS dubs of animu back in high school will attest to the tasteful way in which characters of color were handled.

And I should probably point out that the Five Petals are Taiwanese, not Jap.

  • 6 April // Jan 9, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Yes, you should probably point that out.

    Asshole.

  • 7 JohnnyBoy // Jan 9, 2009 at 5:40 pm

Maybe I should point out that they are not Belgiums

  • 8 Doug // Jan 9, 2009 at 8:06 pm

I’m confused. Should I be offended? I’m not black, so I’m not, but if I was, I wonder if I should be. Strange.

I need to lay off the crack, I guess.

You gotta admit. That was a stirring rendition of “Ludolph the Led Nosed Leindeer”.

the Japanese revenge for Hiroshima is Sony Corp. providing home entertainment to turn us all (including our offspring) into obese “couch ‘taters”…The (communist) Chinese will conquer the Americas without firing a single shot – they will simply propogate all-you-can-eat King Buffets, infinitum/ad nauseum, until we all just “fat” ourselves to death !!! Also, beware because the “iron chef” is a ” meaty-evil” Asian avenger !!!

Please explain Robert Downey Jr. in “Tropic Thunder”, then.

  • 14 socalfrank // Jan 10, 2009 at 10:44 am

Why did the clip end so soon? I was looking forward to seeing the Japanese version of Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul.

  • 15 jim // Jan 10, 2009 at 11:46 am

Oh dear me … that was just so amazing … I … I think I may have actually cried on my computer a little!

No, wait – it’s just really thin watery vomit. My bad.

I’m beginning to think April likes you, Speedy. Cover your nuts.

  • 18 Bitsey // Jan 10, 2009 at 7:11 pm

What is it they say — the more repressed the culture, the gaudier and more politically incorrect the comedy?

  • 19 pal Jacky // Jan 10, 2009 at 7:22 pm

No, no, no sony is not the real bad guy. They are bad but not the worst. That would bynintendo. First super mario, then pokemon and now Wii. My 82 year old uncle who fought the ‘Japs’ in WWII has a Wii.

Speaking of racial insensitivity, my sister discovered that the two ‘golliwog’ dolls of my grandmother’s have tails!! I volunteered to be the one to take them on the ‘antique road show’. Of course, I wanted to crash the ‘million man march’ in blackface.

I like it when the trumpet snaps like a bone and when he shows the teeth at the end!!

I see them broom for me and you.

  • 22 adorisday // Jan 12, 2009 at 2:58 am

April, you know about voice and diction, how come if this guy could imitate 90 percent of Armstrong, he couldn’t handle the “r’s”? Is it just that there is no “r” or something in Japanese?

    Pretty good stuff — Americanese.

  • 23 bnaivar // Jan 12, 2009 at 5:44 am

    Engrish.

  • 24 yelkcub // Jan 12, 2009 at 1:43 pm

Truly astonishing. Thank God they copied German camera lenses better than this guy copied Armstrong or the Japanese economy would never have taken off after WWII.
Anyway, this vid got me to wondering – why do people only do blackface? I’ve never seen someone made-up in Brazilian-face to do ‘Girl from Ipanema,’ or Irish-face to do ‘Danny Boy,’ or Mexican-face to do ‘Livin la Vida Loca ‘(even Ricky Martin didn’t), or Canadian-face to do ‘The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.’ or Jew-face to do some horrible klezmer thing. Oh well.

  • 26 DavidinBerkeley // Jan 12, 2009 at 5:17 pm

    I’m DavidinBerkeley and I approve this jaw-dropper.

  • 27 pal Jacky // Jan 12, 2009 at 6:25 pm

    yelk,
they used to when they did blackface in america. Even as late as ‘61 Natalie wood was maria in the film ‘west side story’ wearing lots of pancake makeup.

  • 28 JohnnyBoy // Jan 12, 2009 at 6:27 pm

But Peter Lorre played Mr. Moto just by putting on glasses

  • 29 yelkcub // Jan 12, 2009 at 9:57 pm

I stand corrected. You admonishment reminded me of the even Pearl Harbor doesn’t deserve this kind of revenge, movie-ruining Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffanys – in that spirit – “So Sollee!”

  • 30 xlistnerliz // Jan 12, 2009 at 10:44 pm

Hee Hee April called Speedy an asshole. Life’s good. Feel better April!

  • 31 Speedy Cerviche // Jan 13, 2009 at 1:15 am

Yeah yelk, one of the great pleasures of classic cinema was the liberal use of “yellowface” when portraying slant-ey– I mean, Orienta– I mean, Asian people. The Good Earth, anyone?

  • 32 JohnnyBoy // Jan 13, 2009 at 11:23 am

The Good Earth, with Mini-Pearl Bailey? yes, that’s right

  • 33 pal Jacky // Jan 13, 2009 at 3:27 pm

My guess is that deep in japanese language you-tube videos there is lots of garish racial insensitivity. Blackface is just the most astonishing in this day and age, so the rest just sort of goes unnoticed

  • 34 N.Y. COUSIN // Jan 13, 2009 at 7:00 pm

i knew a guy who was half black & half japanese & every dec 7th, he would bomb Pearl Bailey !!!

  • 35 Stretch99 // Jan 22, 2009 at 9:15 am

    Was Satchmo – a Satch-MO?

  • 36 JohnnyBoy // Jan 22, 2009 at 11:48 am
