Here’s the New Year’s Eve show from 2000. This show went from 10:00 to midnight, so we actually get to ring in 2001 in the last hour.
Of course, I don’t know if you’ll be able to hear that, because the last few minutes of the show are missing. But I can assure you, 2001 did happen.
By the way, the reason so many minutes are missing from these old shows is actually very simple: we were taping them on one hour cassettes. Some of the hours ran long due to commercials or us blathering too long, and the tape would just run out. We also occasionally forgot to turn the tapes over, so we’d miss minutes at the top of the hour.
Now, this show is noteworthy for several reasons. First of all, we do some end-of-year predictions, so this is sort of our Sylvia Browne show. We speculate which shows will get canceled, and not only were we right, I don’t even remember any of them. We also guess who we think is ripe for a comeback and who’ll just call it quits and swallow their gun. We didn’t get any of those right, but it was fun thinking about it.
But the best part of it all is undoubtedly Jim May; an amazingly gifted pianist and conductor, who brought in a keyboard and played cocktail music during the show.
It almost lent some class to the whole thing.

I think this is the first time I heard you and Roy….
I sat in the car for 1/2 hour. Really sad, actually, on New Years Eve….

You think that’s sad? We were sitting in a shithole studio in Koreatown, eating out of a vending machine.

I have such fond memories of New Year’s Eve 2001 – unfortuantely, this show is not one of them as I missed it.
The whole state was on alert in case the software fixes to all the computers shut down the power grid and everthing else (darn cheap network managers!). What fun.
But, hey, now I can live that experience – cool.

One New Years eve, I was sitting on a plane in Salt Lake City, waiting for it to be deiced, for the second time.
The pilot came over the speaker and wished us all a happy 2003…then the flight attendants threw peanuts at us, and the lady next to me got drunk.

I know you dropped the Cock Shot video link, but did you see todays news, where the Shamwow/Slapshot guy got arrested for beating up a hooker?
Could end up as self-defense…supposedly she bit his tongue and wouldn’t let go! And he looks battered too.

one news years eve, I passed out in the gutter on market street in san francisco. I had to take my GRE on the third and so I cut my holiday vacation short to get in some last bit of studying. No students were around so I went to the city alone. Bart closed at Midnight and I didn’t feel like walking to the mission district to catch the bus over the bay bridge. I was just so sleepy. At six, I was awakened by a cop. No arrest that time.
