Papeete, Can You Hear Me?

September 2nd, 2009 · 25 Comments

Today’s archived show is from Saturday, September 8, 2001.

I was back from a trip to Tahiti with some of my friends and family, and just in time. If the trip had been 3 or 4 days longer, we would have been circling the U.S. for who knows how long.

In any case, things changed pretty drastically at KFI after this. My next scheduled show would have been September 14, 2001, and as you know, there was no comedy anywhere after 9/11; especially not in talk radio. KFI devoted themselves entirely to an orgiastic glut of non-news and panic mongering, and I was relieved of my duties for all of October.

Actually, that’s not completely accurate. I was given the choice of doing the same shit everyone else was doing, or staying home. I stayed home.

I came back in November, and stayed for another year. But I sort of think as this show as the end of my run at KFI. After this show, they started listening, starting trying to influence the content, even changing the way I said the station ID.

KFI: Are you mumbling the station ID?
ME: Well, yes. But I say it correctly at least once in every segment.
KFI: Why would you do that?
ME: Because I think it’s important not to take ourselves too seriously.
KFI: But it’s our station ID.
ME: Yes, but we say it 12 times an hour. People know what it is.
KFI: Well you should stop doing it.
ME: But people really like it. It’s caught on. It’s popular.
KFI: Don’t do it anymore.

And that’s kind of how it went after that. KFI stopped being a place of many voices and became a place where many people spoke with one. They went from really being irreverent to simply putting up snarky billboards. They went from being leaders to followers. In short, they just became talk radio.

I never realized how much the words MDA Telethon is really code for a RAVE

KFI has been going downhill ever since you left. And starting next week they’ll be putting out 35 hours of Bill Handel a week. Perfect. He pronounces the station ID very clearly.

Aw, nuts. I thought we were done with fills for the old shows and I burned them to cd.

Are more known to be coming? If so, I’ll hold off re-burning.

I will simultaneously add: Thanks for making them available to us.

For me, when they replaced all of the “Live and Local” shows that they were so proud of with seven hours of “Coast to Coast” (Which made a total of eight stations that I could get it on at night) was when the magic was gone between KFI and me. After that it was never the same and we just sort of drifted apart.

Bitch still has my Roy Orbison CDs.

There are a couple shows left in the box, Dave. Maybe three. Today I encoded an undated tape labeled “Gothic Personals,” which turned out to hold an entire show (7/8/01) and not the voicemails I had expected. I’ll send those MP3s to April soon.

Good to know, Craig. I was wondering how many were left.

I’m guessing a lot of the April & Roy shows from mid-September, November and December 2000 are lost to posterity?

    Thanks, Craig.

Fantastic! More shows to upload to my iPod that I can listen to at school while doing homework in the library, then laugh so hard at one point that the librarian comes over the back dungeon corner I work in and asks me to keep it down or leave.

We miss you so much that Gooch and I have taken to listening to these shows together with all the pictures from Morongo laid out in front of us on the bed.

Actually More bill handel is a step up for KFI. His afternoon show replaces ‘dr. Laura’ whose moving on to KFWB.
    It is going TALK.
I know what your thinking, another KGIL.
But KGIL is going ‘retro’ I don’t know what that means but last night I heard an old radio show and the ‘the ode to billy joe’.

This leaves KNX as the only straight news station, but since KFWB is its sister station. having the two news stations run be the same company, isn’t really having two news stations.

  • 14 ihearttalkradio // Sep 3, 2009 at 4:37 pm

I don’t care about Dr. Laura leaving, but surely KFI could have hired someone else to fill the time slot.

I’m not buying this “it’s cheaper” excuse either. I highly doubt Bill Handel and John/Ken are doing more work for no extra pay. With all the talk show hosts out of work, KFI could have easily hired someone new for the same amount of money.

They went to being nazis is what they became. They wanted hosts that would promote our invading Iraq because of “weapons of mass destruction”.
The only good one they have is George Noory. You want the truth, listen to him. And Dr. Laura, when she isn’t on a religious jag.

10,000 steps, Stretch? Wow! You must have been a heavy drinker before you quit.

Dr. laura is the most hypocritical self righteous piece of shit that ever had a married man she was fucking take nude Polaroids of.
KFI would be better if Goebbels, took over the slot than to keep the homewrecking whore .Yapping her deluded superiority bullcrap dupes unsuspecting morons into believing that they need her approval when in fact she can’t even keep to her own morality.

She killed her mother, she left her alone to die.

Also anyone who knows anything about letters and Sciences know you don’t use the term ‘Dr’, if a work is outside the field you got your PHD in.
Hence certain books are’carl sagan’ and certain books are ‘dR. Carl sagan’
I don’t see much Phys Ed advice in any of her books

As Bill Balance said ‘i know she’s an expert on ‘the 10 commandments’ she’s broken 9 thay I know of and I only thimk it is a matter of time before they find bodies of people she has killed.

  • 18 Auntie Vera Charles // Sep 4, 2009 at 9:43 am

NOT defending that Schlessinger twat, but her PHD is in physiology from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the cunt received her post-doctoral certification in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling from the University of Southern California. There is PLENTY to slam her with, just use the correct information. I personally wish her asshole would heal over and she’d explode all over her Santa Barbara multi-million dollar estate.

  • 19 pal Jacky // Sep 4, 2009 at 9:51 am

Her doctorate was not in psychology.
She gor a post graduate certificate(which is less than a master’s degee) that she refers to as a post doctorat since she got it after her Doctorate.. This does not add up to a PHD in psychology, n
Carl sagen wrote a number of sdcience books outside the realm of astrophysics which he wouldn’t use the ‘doctor’ title. It is a fraud on her part to refer to herself as a ‘doctor’ when dispencing her advice.
One wouldn’t get their their dog to a dentist instead of a vet.

    I smell nits.

  • 21 clevelandphil // Sep 4, 2009 at 10:12 am

Blab blab blab go tell it to Advocate.com

  • 22 pal Jacky // Sep 4, 2009 at 10:52 am

    Numero uno,
I got to drink coffee before posting first thing in the morning.
    Numero two-oh.
    It isn’t nit-picking.
If she put that on her shingle and practiced psychology as ‘Dr’ she could be charged with fraud. Becoming a ‘licensed psychotherapist’ isn’t that hard for any college graduate.
I say we start listening to the unabomber and give him a show called ‘Dr. Ted’. It would only be ‘nitpicking to be alarmed that is doctorate is in Mathematics.

  • 23 Auntie Vera Charles // Sep 4, 2009 at 10:55 am

    Last word.

  • 24 chrisbcritter // Sep 5, 2009 at 12:16 am

Last word? Okay: Do the good “doctor” and her “we raised him to be a warrior” son remind you of Mrs. Iselin and Raymond Shaw from “The Manchurian Candidate”?

  • 25 Stretch99 // Sep 8, 2009 at 5:05 pm
